Parker Residence is a family home in Muriwai, designed with a focus on rich materials, dark timbers and a warm, moody feel. Working alongside Gemma Muir, Chris Watt developed the lighting scheme to complement the architecture and bring out the best in the home’s finishes.
The dark timber presented a bit of a challenge, as it absorbs a lot of light, so getting the balance right was key.
By using different circuits and carefully considered lighting effects, the scheme creates a comfortable, ambient feel throughout the home, with the flexibility to suit different moments of family life.
One of Chris’s favourite features is the Mantel Linear pendant above the dining table. Its natural materiality works beautifully with the timber used throughout the architecture, tying the lighting and interior finishes together.
The Deep Starr Adjustable downlight was specified throughout the transition spaces, bedrooms and hallways of the home. Paired with a Hero Eco lamp, the fittings create soft, concentrated pools of ambient light, while the black frame sits seamlessly within the warm timber ceiling finish. The deep-set design helps to minimise glare, creating a comfortable source of light.
The Ago Applique was selected throughout the exterior, sitting neatly against the dark timber slatted walls of the home.Finished in black, the fitting blends seamlessly into the timber when unlit, allowing the architecture to remain the focus during the day. By night, it provides a subtle wash of light across the surrounding walls, adding warmth and depth to the exterior without feeling overly prominent.
The Ilumina W203 sits beautifully against the warmth of the walnut dresser, with its copper finish bringing a subtle sense of richness and character to the space. Over time, the copper has naturally aged and developed a soft patina, giving the piece an individuality that only grows with time. Its gentle, warm light adds another layer to the timber, creating a small but moody moment within the room.
The Terra 0.5 Wall Light brings a playful contrast of warm brass and Chartreuse ceramic. It adds a pop of colour and texture to the space, while the brass provides a warmth that works beautifully against the darker tones. The result is a small statement piece that brings personality to the room while still feeling connected to the wider earthy and moody material palette.
Paired Charm Semi-Recessed spotlights sit within the pitched timber ceilings, finished in black to complement the darker detailing throughout the home. Directed onto the walls, the fittings create soft washes of light across the vertical surfaces, adding depth and warmth while drawing attention to the natural texture of the timber and surrounding materials.
The Taliesin 3 Table brings a piece of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural history into Parker Residence, inspired by the iconic Fallingwater home. Its geometric timber form and soft, indirect glow create a warm, moody presence, reflecting the natural materials and darker interiors of Parker Residence while echoing the home’s own connection to its rugged coastal setting.
The Mantel 60 Linear sits above the dining table in American Oak with brass detailing, bringing a warm, natural presence to the space. Its clean linear form complements the timber finishes throughout Parker Residence, while the integrated light provides a soft, even glow across the dining table, creating a warm focal point for gathering.
The Deep Starr IP44 was selected for the wet areas throughout Parker Residence, offering the same deep-set, low-glare design as the standard Deep Starr with added protection for moisture-prone spaces. Its black frame sits neatly within the timber ceilings, while the focused light creates soft pools of illumination across the bathrooms without overpowering the darker material palette.
The Watt Wall Sconce was custom made in partnership with Inlite NZ and Southdrawn in Melbourne, creating a tailored fitting for the bathrooms at Parker Residence. Mounted alongside the vanity mirrors, its slim profile provides a soft, even glow across the face while the black finish blends neatly into the darker material palette of the home.
Four Yori Pendant fittings are suspended above the kitchen island, creating a clean rhythm across the length of the bench. Their slender form keeps the installation visually light, while the focused light provides practical illumination across the island. The simple black finish also ties into the darker detailing used throughout Parker Residence.
A simple, low level round black stair light sits quietly within the dark timber panelling, providing a soft wash of light along the steps.
Two w241 Faro table lights in raw aluminium sit on the outdoor dining table, bringing a soft, low level glow to the centre of the setting. Their portable, rechargeable design allows them to be easily moved around the outdoor spaces, while an IP65 rating makes them well suited to the coastal elements. Compact and unobtrusive, they provide a relaxed layer of light that can shift with the mood as the evening goes on.
