Southdrawn set out to create Husk as a lighting collection defined by clarity, restraint and longevity, not driven by trend or ornament, but by the strength of its materials and the integrity of its design. The collection comprises a pendant, wall sconce and floor light, each conceived as a study in contrast and thoughtful consideration. Central to the design is a biodegradable shade made from micropulp, a material composed of waste paper and hemp, fabricated by Byron Bay based Zeoform. In its forming stage, the micropulp behaves much like clay, before finishing with the machinability of timber. This unique material allowed Southdrawn to draw on their deep knowledge of tactile materials, while embracing and responding to the new challenges it introduced throughout the development process.
Vision
Southdrawn approached Husk with a deliberate focus on pairing the experimental with the traditional, creating a collection that elevates the perception of recycled materials through careful context and finish. Every detail of the design was reconsidered, from fixings and interfaces to the relationship between materials, ensuring that the lights could be disassembled, serviced and returned. This commitment reflects true cradle-to-cradle thinking, where sustainability is embedded in both material choice and design process.
Material
At the heart of Husk is a biodegradable micropulp shade, made from waste paper and hemp by Byron Bay based Zeoform. In its forming stage, the micropulp behaves like clay and finishes with the machinability of timber, allowing Southdrawn to bring their expertise in tactile materials to bear while adapting to the unique challenges of a new medium. This shade is paired with artisan-formed slumped glass, a deliberate gesture that contrasts innovation with heritage. Glass, long associated with value and architectural permanence, reframes the humble origins of the recycled shade, lending it weight, grace and an elevated presence.
Product
The result is lighting that lives with quiet clarity. The soft, sculptural forms balance sustainability with a refined, architectural presence, creating pieces that feel grounded, confident and purposeful. Husk does not lead with its environmental responsibility; it earns it through intention, demonstrating how considered design can elevate sustainable outcomes. Every aspect of the collection reflects Southdrawn’s belief that sustainable design should not only be responsible but also beautiful, tactile, and enduring, offering a vision of what lighting can achieve when clarity, restraint and material integrity guide the process from start to finish.
